Just wondering what kind of software is good for producing tracks.
i know theres ableton but is there any others? I'm on a Mac btw but i don't think that matters much.
O and i need a pair of speakers just for my place... nothing to big and loud but enough for me to do editing, record, mix at home.... what should i get?

New or used. If new, then there are a lot of options. If used, the I recommend garage sales, and if that doesn't work out, you could always check out the GoodWill. I know that I just said GoodWill, but hey they have that crappy electronics corner and you could get a decent pair of 80 speakers cheap. If you want new, just say so, and I'll recommend some good choices.

As far as speakers go, depends on your budget. I think all you really need are some decent computer speakers, but there are pro quality studio monitors like krk and alesis and mackie...

Ableton (though I haven't tried it since 2) is the shit. One of the most intuitive apps I've ever used.
*goes to see if Ardour is still a bitch to set up on Linux*

It's getting better :) As long as you've got the gnome gtk, glib, etc stuff already.
Been a while since I tried, but back then it was bad times.

Yes, I remember those times :) Linux audio is really taking off recently though- it just needs more coverage in popular magazines, etc to get people on board. There used to be a Linux Audio ezine which is now dead. I've sometimes considerd trying to rally a group of people to do something along those lines again.
Oh and they coded in midi functionality to Ardour this summer in google summer of code!! It's not in the release yet, but Ardour 3.0 will support midi!
Win.

ive been messing with fruityloops.. any input on fruityloops?

I use Adobe Audition for recording, loops, samples and such. It works well - plus it is easy to feed into video editing software for making those nude movies.

If you're on a Mac, Logic is king. Logic Studio is the full app, Express the $200 low-end version; though I'm sure you could find a torrent for either one. It's used by lots of top producers.
I produce in Ableton because I'm on a PC. It's not as intuitive or aesthetically nice as Logic, but it's a viable option and good quality. When fucking around with my first ten or so tracks, though, it was on my buddy's Macbook Pro using Logic Express--I'm definitely glad I had it to learn on.
Another benefit to both Logic and Ableton are their stock plugins, usable out of the box. They do well in their host software compared to most 3rd-party plugins.
If you can find a download for Logic (or you can afford it), I definitely recommend it. If you can't, I know of at least one torrent that you can use for Ableton... it worked for me :P
Other alternatives are Pro Tools (which is PC only and expensive), Cubase, and Sonar. PT is the industry standard and has the most 3rd party companies making quality plugins for it. The others are cheaper (~$400-500) and are simply sequencers that allow you to compose thru midi and edit samples.
As far as FL Studio (fruity loops) goes, I'm not a fan. Maybe I just dont know how to use it, but after trying it out I think the whole thing blows. It's cool for people who want to make lame hip hop shit from one of roughly two stock drum kits and some seriously lame synths and sounds. For other--more serious--people, FL doesn't cut it.

I'm trying to get started with ableton (torrenting or cracking), but I think I'll need to get it from one of you guys. DOES ANYONE HAVE IT WHO'S WILLING TO SHARE??
I used FL 7, and I really enjoyed creating melodies using the piano roll feature, but, as others have said, the quality of the synths themselves kind of sucks, so...
But whatever program I use, I want to create melodies from scratch. I DO NOT RESPECT taking pre-made riffs and just arranging them like children's blocks and calling it "your song", like people do on their GarageBand youtube vids. That's not composing.

Have we met? How good are you at these programs? If you're pretty good, would you be interested in maybe giving a turtorial to the club???

I just made it out to the club the first time yesterday. I don't think we have met.
I took a few audio tech classes, so I could give a run down on the basics of recording theory and arranging in Logic / Rewiring reason. I could teach about the different types of synthesis in Reason, but I'm still working with the advanced features of Logic. (I was taught using protools)
So maybe an absolute beginner's kick off tutorial?
I think it would be awesome to get a producing scene going in DVC - If we get some good enough tracks going maybe we could mix them into some shows. Let me know if you want to get together and figure something out.

Sounds like a good plan. We've been talking about getting a production team together, but we've been really busy lately planning for our events. If you wanna start off the production section, I think that'd be cool. Even if you're just teaching what you know.
P.S. You should go into the Introduction thead and create an quick bio about yourself for the forums, since you're new.

ableton ,reason, cubase, logic, fl studio, etc. etc. all DAWs are essentially the same.
i use reason, ableton, and fl studio (sometimes simultaneously). in my opinion, it's all about what best suites your personal workflow.
mess around with as many as you can and find which you are most comfortable with. then go from there.
